Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch Surgery
The duodenal switch (DS) procedure is a weight loss surgery procedure that is composed of a restrictive and a malabsorptive aspect. Approximately 70% of the stomach is removed to restrict the amount of food that the patient can consume. Then, the small intestine is re-routed to reduce the amount of time the body has to absorb the calories and fat that are consumed. As a result, following surgery, patients only absorb approximately 20% of the fat they take in.
The primary advantage of this surgery is the reduction in calories and fat that a patient can absorb. In reducing the number of calories and increasing the metabolism, a patient not only loses weight, but can also reverse Type 2 Diabetes, reduce sleep apnea as well as reducing hypertension.
