Citizens of the US, Canada, the EU and Commonwealth countries do not currently need a visa for stays of up to eight months. Check with the embassy for specific requirements. Citizens of most Central and South American countries, including Mexico, do not require a visa for stays up to 14 days. Visas are required for all visitors staying longer than eight months.

ATMs are available in many parts of Mexicali. Make sure you inform your bank before traveling abroad, and be aware you may be charged for cash withdrawals. It is advisable to exchange some cash before arriving in Mexicali.

Major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Mexicali. You can use your credit card to get cash advances at most commercial banks.

Country Code

Making international calls requires special codes. To call Mexico from the United States, follow these steps.

  • Dial 011. This is the international access code and allows you to call outside of the country.
  • Dial 52. This is the country code for Mexico.
  • Dial the area code for the city you want to call. The city code for Mexicali is 686.
  • Dial the rest of the telephone number.

Spanish is the predominant language, but many people speak English making it very easy for tourists.

Border FastLane Pass

The border fast pass program, officially called FastLane, but commonly called Fast Pass, is a single-use pass that gives you access to a special lane designated for medical tourists. You will still need to present the necessary documentation to U.S. border officials.
